New Releases

Three new releases coming up this week. All three look interesting, and of course, going on my ever growing reading list.

callCall Me By My Name by John Ed Bradley
Atheneum Books for Young Readers

Summary: Growing up in Louisiana in the late 1960s, Tater Henry has experienced a lot of prejudice. His town is slow to desegregate and slower still to leave behind deep-seated prejudice.

Despite the town’s sensibilities, Rodney Boulett and his twin sister Angie befriend Tater, and as their friendship grows stronger, Tater and Rodney become an unstoppable force on the football field. That is, until Rodney sees Tater and Angie growing closer, too, and Rodney’s world is turned upside down. Teammates, best friends, Rodney’s world is threatened by a hate he did not know was inside of him.

As the town learns to accept notions like a black quarterback, some changes may be too difficult to accept.

Now Deanna is struggling to break free from the gilded cage that would trap her forever…

guardianThe Eighth Guardian by Meredith McCardle
Amazon Children’s

Summary: Amanda Obermann. Code name Iris.

It’s Testing Day. The day that comes without warning, the day when all juniors and seniors at The Peel Academy undergo a series of intense physical and psychological tests to see if they’re ready to graduate and become government operatives. Amanda and her boyfriend Abe are top students, and they’ve just endured thirty-six hours of testing. But they’re juniors and don’t expect to graduate. That’ll happen next year, when they plan to join the CIA—together.

But when the graduates are announced, the results are shocking. Amanda has been chosen—the first junior in decades. And she receives the opportunity of a lifetime: to join a secret government organization called the Annum Guard and travel through time to change the course of history. But in order to become the Eighth Guardian in this exclusive group, Amanda must say good-bye to everything—her name, her family, and even Abe—forever.

Who is really behind the Annum Guard? And can she trust them with her life?

  1. Call Me By My Name was very good, and I’ve given the ARC to a couple of students to read, and they’ve enjoyed it as well. We need more sports books in general, and it’s great when they are more culturally diverse!

    1. Glad to hear that Call Me By My Name is a good book. I am looking forward to reading it.

  2. I’d only seen The Eight Guardian around, but ahhh I want to read Call Me By My Name so very much! The premise sounds so intriguing, and I never would’ve found it without you guys featuring it, so thanks a bunch 🙂
