New Releases

Below the title, there are two hands braiding grasses together into a braid. Above the braid the background is white and below it is purple. The title is in the same light green color as the grass.

This is an especially exciting release week for me since I have been waiting for the young people’s edition of Braiding Sweetgrass for a few years. I’m so glad this book will be more accessible for younger readers now.

Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer, Monique Gray Smith, Nicole Neidhardt (Illustrator)
Zest Books

Drawing from her experiences as an Indigenous scientist, botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer demonstrated how all living things―from strawberries and witch hazel to water lilies and lichen―provide us with gifts and lessons every day in her best-selling book Braiding Sweetgrass. Adapted for young adults by Monique Gray Smith, this new edition reinforces how wider ecological understanding stems from listening to the earth’s oldest teachers: the plants around us. With informative sidebars, reflection questions, and art from illustrator Nicole Neidhardt, Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults brings Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge, and the lessons of plant life to a new generation.

Another release to look for this week is this fantasy re-telling that’s part of the Grimrose Girls series.

Black background. Two spools of thread with needles are at either side of the bottom. The thread weaves up the side and takes on the appearance of the stems of roses. The roses are turquoise and go all the way up to the top of the book where each side meets. There are also two turquoise snowflakes just below the top roses. In the center is a turquoise silhouette of a young woman with flowing hair. In the silhouette, there are three people in the background that are like black cutouts. The Wicked Remain by Laura Pohl

At Grimrose Académie, the fairy-tale deaths continue. And unless the curse is broken, one of the girls could be next.

Nani, Yuki, Ella, and Rory have discovered the truth about the curse that’s left a trail of dead bodies at Grimrose. But the four still know nothing of its origins, or how to stop the cycle of doomed fates.

And each girl harbors her own secret. One is learning why she was brought to the school. One struggles to keep her new and deadly power under control. One knows exactly how much time she has left.

And one, trying to escape her dark destiny, will come even closer to fulfilling it.

Can the girls change their own stories and break the curse? Or must one of them die to end it forever?
