Huda F Would Love You? A graphic novel by Huda Fahmy with color by Weinye Chen
Publisher’s Summary: In this funny and tender finale to the Huda F series, Huda has a plan to find love—but she might need to find herself first!
It’s the summer after Huda’s high school graduation, and love is in the air! Or it’s about to be, anyway. Because Huda has the ingredients for a perfect love story: a butt-kicking girl power squad of new friends, and a plan to woo all the aunties into setting her up with their eligible sons. But when she finds herself caught between her friends and her heart, gender roles and ambitions, and her fears and dreams, Huda begins to realize that finding her own “happily ever after” might require changing herself—or her expectations.
My Thoughts: Huda Fahmy wrote another fantastic graphic novel. This is the final book in the series and while the context will be more clear if the books are read in sequence, this one can be read out of order and still be understood. I highly recommend the previous books so you can get all of them and read them together if you would like the optimal experience.
While not meant to be a memoir or autobiography, the main character does share the author’s name and some aspects of her life. It’s realistic fiction and has just the right amount of humor to keep it entertaining and somewhat lighthearted even when Huda is dealing with challenges.
Huda has a plan and a checklist to get there. The only issue is that the plan needs a few modifications. She’s taking a summer class focused on Jane Austen and her work. Some of Huda’s checklist is highly related to Austen because love and marriage are bouncing around in her mind a good portion of the time. She wants to live the part of a rom-com character. She believes that she knows exactly what she wants, but finding out who she is and what she truly wants is actually the struggle.
As a non-Muslim, I really appreciate books like this because seeing many different ways to live as a Muslim is helpful to me in breaking stereotypes. The author includes some explanatory notes so someone unfamiliar with Islam can still understand things, but it did not seem to bog down the story for those that wouldn’t need such explanations. They were generally unobtrusive and off to the side.
Recommendation: Get this as soon as possible especially if you have read and enjoyed the previous books in the series. The Huda books are delightful and always bring a smile to my face. I’m happy to connect readers with any of the books in the series.
